Summer Electives
We believe that the gospel changes everything about us: it transforms our hearts, it renews our minds, and it instructs all that we do. This summer at Providence we are once again offering multiple equipping opportunities—we call them “Summer Electives.” Please email Claire if you have any questions about one of these electives. If the cost is prohibitive for you, please let us know. Everything kicks off in early June, so read more about each elective below and sign up over at the registration page.
What does God have to say about my career? What does it look like to live out the gospel in my workplace? Most of us spend the majority of our time at work, and yet, the workplace is often perceived as a place of toil or something separate from our faith. This class will help you develop a theology of work, understand how works shapes us, and learn how to see work from God’s perspective.
Leader: Wes Fang, Taylor Brooks, & Steve Teng
When: Sundays, 9:00-10:15am / Where: University Ave.
Length: 4 weeks (June 2 – June 23)
Cost: $15
What does Christian unity look like in a polarized society? Whether we are talking about theology, politics, ethics, or issues of conscience, how do we form our convictions and get along with people who disagree with us? This class will offer a vision for Christian unity, rooted in the wisdom of Scripture and attentive to the dynamics that make these conversations about controversial topics so hard.
Leader: Brady Bowman
When: Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm / Where: Church Office
Length: 4 weeks (June 6 – June 27)
Cost: $15
God’s kingdom expands through people talking about their faith. It’s a simple plan, but there are so many barriers: uncertainty about what to say and how to say it, fear of how people will respond, and maybe even a lack of compassion. This class will deepen your conviction and give your more confidence to pursue spiritual conversations with people.
Leader: Will Walker & Kendal Haug
When: Sundays, 9:00-10:15am / Where: University Ave.
Length: 6 weeks (June 23 – July 28)
Cost: $15
The teenage years are the final stage in a child’s life before they are sent off into the world. Parenting teenagers, then, is essentially a planned liberation, whether you (or they) are ready for it or not. The objective of this 4-week study (going through Feeding the Mouth That Bites You) is to be intentional about creating a wise parenting plan with your spouse and supporting one another with accountability and encouragement. Lunch provided.
Leader: Brandon & Janice Reyes
When: Sundays, 12:00-2:00pm / Where: University Ave.
Length: 4 weeks (July 21 – Aug 11)
Cost: $15
The way we respond (or don’t respond) with our kids’ misbehavior shapes their beliefs about themselves, the world, and God. This is why connecting with their hearts—not just their minds—is vital to changing daily behavior battles. This six-week class, using the Discipline That Connects curriculum, is focused on equipping parents to help their kids feel safe, loved, capable, and responsible for their actions. Childcare will be provided.
Leader: Chris & Rachel Paxton
When: Sundays, 9:00-10:15am / Where: University Ave.
Length: 6 weeks (June 30 – Aug 4)
Cost: $15
