Summer Electives

We believe that the gospel changes everything about us: it transforms our hearts, it renews our minds, and it instructs all that we do. This summer at Providence we are once again offering multiple equipping opportunities—we call them “Summer Electives.” Please email Kaitlyn if you have any questions about one of these electives. If the cost is prohibitive for you, please let us know. Everything kicks off in early June, so read more about each elective below and sign up over at the registration page.

Seeing the Gospel in the Old Testament
Jesus taught his disciples that he was the fulfillment of the law and prophets–the entirety of the Bible is about him and pointing to him. Yet, sometimes, it’s hard to see Jesus when we come to books like Leviticus and Judges. Where is Jesus in the minutia about festivals, the judgement of nations that no longer exist, and in the obscure stories we find throughout the Old Testament? How do we read, understand, and engage these texts in such a way to see the Good News of Jesus? This class will give you tools for interpretation while working through multiple examples from the Old Testament.

Leader: Brad Watson & Matt Ferguson
When: Sundays, 9:00-10:15am
Length: 5 weeks (June 1-29)
Cost: $15

Dealing With Grief & Loss
We all experience loss—whether the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, the loss of our health, the loss of a dream or how we thought our life would turn out. Grief is a natural response when we experience loss due to the brokenness of the world. And yet, as Christians, the Bible tells us we “do not grieve as others do who have no hope.” But what does it mean to grieve with hope, and how do we do that? These are just some of the questions we will explore together in this four-week class. We will examine the emotional, physical, and spiritual effects of grief, while reminding one another of the compassionate and loving God who is with us in our grief.

Leader: Shanda Anderson, M.Ed, LPC-S from Austin Stone Counseling Center
When: Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm
Length: 4 weeks (July 10-31)
Cost: $15

Thriving as Kingdom Citizens in Our Vocation
How do we live and work as citizens of the kingdom of God? What is the purpose of my career and vocation? How do I discern my calling within my work? In collaboration with the Austin Center for Faith and Work, this class will help you develop a vision for your vocation. Each week we’ll also process questions about the gospel and our specific cultural moment. For example: How do we pursue human dignity in an age of rapid technological change through A.I.? How do we steward and leverage our authority for
good as we manage others?

Leader: Steve Teng & others from the Center for Faith and Work
When: Sundays, 9:00-10:15am
Length: 4 weeks (July 13 – August 3)
Cost: $15

Praying Through the Psalms
Charles Spurgeon once wrote, “If a church is to be what it ought to be for the purposes of God, we must train it in the holy art of prayer.” During this four-week class we will focus on growing in our understanding of prayer through a variety of forms found in the Psalms and in developing a passion for prayer through the theological and artistic richness of the Psalms.

Leader: Graeme Donaldson & Alex Moser

When: Sundays, 9:00-10:15am
Length: 4 weeks (July 13 – August 3)
Cost: $15
